Concert: Day's Last Glow

  • St. Basil's Catholic Parish 50 Saint Joseph Street Toronto, ON, M5S 1J4 Canada (map)

Join us for Day’s Last Glow, a concert with the Blackwood Trio, featuring artists Peter-Anthony Togni (organ/piano), Jeff Reilly (bass clarinet), and India Gailey (cello). “Day’s Last Glow” is a haunting and atmospheric mix of new and old, composed and improvised on a unique foundation of jazz, gregorian chant, and minimalism, defying stylistic boundaries with virtuosity, musicality and sensitivity. Admission is by free-will donation (suggested amount, $20).

Blackwood’s unique, dark and lyrical sound has the precision and clarity found in any classical ensemble, but also taps into the expressive freedom found in the improvisational gestures of contemporary jazz. Bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly and pianist/organist Peter-Anthony Togni and JUNO-nominated cellist India Gailey explore plainchant, European jazz and contemporary classical techniques, developing a deep musical connection to create music that critics have called “sonically haunting”.

Blackwood has toured Europe, Asia and across North America, performing in international venues such as Shostakovich Hall in St Petersburg, the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, St. John’s Smith Square in London, and in Paris’s Église Saint-Séverin.  As a duo, Peter and Jeff have recorded award-winning chamber and string orchestra works featuring bass clarinet on the ECM, Warner Classics and ATMA Classique labels, garnering 4 JUNO nominations between them. With India, who brings her explorations, improvisations and collaborations with Andrew Noseworthy, Nicole Lizée, Yaz Lancaster, Philip Glass and more to the table, the Blackwood Trio continues to explore new ways in which music can be seen, felt, and heard.
