Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament
Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament are two forms of devotion, or prayer, directed specifically at the Eucharist. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament happens at St. Basil’s on the first Friday of every month after the 12:10 p.m. mass. It is followed by the Benediction, ending at about 1:30 p.m.
During the Exposition, or Adoration, the consecrated host is put into a monstrance, a special holder that can be held aloft by the priest or placed in such a way that it can be easily seen by all who come to pray before it. The Exposition should begin after the Eucharist, or mass, has been celebrated. During the Exposition, people will kneel in silent personal prayer. The Exposition is followed by the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
Benediction means blessing. During the Benediction, special prayers and hymns of adoration are recited and sung and those who are present are blessed.
